Has A Self Help "guru" Ripped You Off?

We have recently witnessed the furore over the deaths of three people in a "sweat lodge" in Arizona during a "Spiritual Warrior" retreat run by self-help guru James Ray who has now been charged with three counts of manslaughter as a result. Allegations from participants in the retreat include that people who were complaining of feeling faint or dizzy or who were clearly feeling the effects of dehydration were forced to stay in the sweat lodge, whilst others claim that a thirty six hour enforced fast also played its part in the tragedy. Whatever truly happened will, no doubt, emerge in time - but the key question has to be asked as to why people would pay up to $9,000 to be subjected to a rite of passage such as this.

The current publicity surrounding this incident masks a deeper unease that the public should have with people who encourage their followers to believe them to be gurus because no one needs a guru, you don't need any representative to act on your behalf on introducing you to your true inner self. You don't need to become dependent on someone else to help your self to emerge. Self help means that, ultimately, you've got to help yourself.

I've been working with people since 1996 and regularly come across the ill-effects of guru dependence. One guy told me that he didn't know how he would survive the next six months because he'd been told to attend the Annual European Sales Conference of his company on the same weekend that he'd booked his "annual pilgrimage" (his words, not mine) to partake of Tony Robbins at London's Excel Centre. "How will I do without my Tony fix?" he asked - and he was serious. And, it is serious - if you're seeking the inner you, you need to detach yourself from the transient things of this world that drag the normal soul down - you certainly don't need to attach yourself to some new addiction.

I've had to assist people in re-directing their minds away from clearly self-destructive (either in a business, personal or relationship sense) courses of action that "came to them" in the pressure-cooker, cult-like environment of one or other self-help guru's retreat. One guy ended up stalking his ex-girlfriend after being encouraged to "follow his heart" (repeatedly chanted at him) in some form of "group therapy" session. He was told that positive thinking would bring her to him (suggesting his thoughts could control someone else - very dangerous). Indeed, if you want to explore the havoc that positive thinking can wreak, take a look at Barbara Ehrenreich's latest book, "Smile or Die: How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World".

But back to my point - and another client who I had to assist. He had just returned from a $90,000 (yes, you read that right!) two-week retreat to find his wife had left him - she discovered that he had taken out a new mortgage on his home to pay the $90,000. The staff of the guru in question are well known for arranging multiple car loans for those who wish to attend but who don't have the wherewithal to re-mortgage their house. I was informed by my client that he was told that this guru believed himself to be jesus christ re-incarnate and that he "recollected giving the Sermon on the Mount" - some saviour though because, having a penchant for large-breasted girls, the front row of his retreats were jokingly known as "Silicon Valley"!!

Why am I giving you these details? I want to make a couple of very important points. Number One: All of us need all the help we can get to find our true passion, discover our inner potential and live life to the full. But only a fool would take a paracetamol for a headache and then become addicted. Number Two: You don't need anyone to come between you and God (however you define God) - all major spiritual traditions intimate that we are an integral part of the divine, quantum physics states that we are an indivisible, quantum entangled part of the underlying entity. Find God by finding your inner self - not by becoming hooked on some guru.

Number Three: Self help means helping yourself. Yes, as I've said, we all need guidance - we all know, in truth, little or nothing about our universe and our place in it. Most of us instinctively feel, however, that there is more to life than meets the eye - and we want that "more". Not only that, it is ours as a natural inheritance. But the journey to discovery (of the self and our purpose) is one we can only make for ourselves. Sure, we need the signposts but each step taken is a step that can only be taken alone.

So, by all means, read your self-help books, watch your self-help DVDs, participate in your self-help seminars - but use them as nothing more than the valuable resources they are to assist you on your journey - for to arrive you need to free yourself from all attachment.

Question about the catholic church after seeing the movie Angels and Demons?

Ok I saw Angels and Demons and I just want to know. Is the Catholic church really like that? Because the movie had a lot of history of the church and they have a crappy past. Also in Rome do statues and things really point to stuff like that?

NOPE.

Dan Brown takes events from multiple centuries and portrays them as happening all at once. He takes statues which were not even there at the time he proposes, built by the people he says sculpted them, and in many cases, pointing in the wrong direction, coupled with some of his own conjecture and fiction and weaves ALL of that into a story that to some, seems plausible.

Discovery channel, who is by no means "pro-catholic" did a great show on debunking it. I only caught the last 6 minutes of it and in those 6 minutes they debunked just about EVERYTHING in the movie.

Galileo was not part of the illuminati, it didn't exist during his time.
Some of the statues point in the wrong direction.
The Obalisk wasn't in the center of the courtyard until like the 19th century or something like that.
AND the Catholic church doesn't try to repress science. Never did. In the past it tried to repress heresy and errors, which it thought certain scientific principles WERE, but it is not like it tried to repress what it knew to be true or something.

If you listen to Dan Brown, the author of those books, he waffles back and forth between claiming the books are pure fiction, to trying to say they "provoke honest dialogue" or are "thought provoking" If that were the case, he wouldn't mix fact and fiction and confuse the hell out of everyone.

The facts are that the Catholic church is the largest non-governmental provider of health care, education and relief aid in the world.
It runs Universities that have Medical programs.
It runs over 600 hospitals in the US alone, all of which use science.
It protected a lot of human knowledge from being destroyed during dark ages.
St. Isadore of Spain, a Catholic Priest, was responsible for creating hundreds of libraries throughout Spain and France.
The Father of modern Genetics is Gregory Mendel.. a Catholic Priest
The first person to use Hubble's work to propose the "big bang" theory, was a Catholic priest by the name of Lemaitre (although Hoyle coined the term)
It was the FIRST Christian denomination to openly say that Evolution was a valid theory to explain the creation of life on this planet, though it doesn't say it is the only theory, it doesn't contradict the belief in God.

PLEASE don't get your information about Catholicism from Dan Brown's books or anyone who references him. Dan Brown himself, says it is a work of fiction. Non-Catholic historians pick both his movies apart to pieces.

IF you shouldn't get your knowledge of physics from the movies...nor should you get your knowledge of Catholicism from Angels and Demons or The Davinci Code

Catholic What To Do On A First Date

Over the years, the accepted form of the first date has changed.  Back in the day, a guy would pick a girl up at home, meet her parents, drive her to a restaurant for dinner, then maybe a trip to the drive thru movie theater.  But things are different now.

To have a successful first date, here are some do's and don'ts you should keep in mind.

Don't...

Pick up your date or be picked up by your date.  Remember that the world is not as safe as it used to be.  There are lots of scary people out there, so it is safer to be your own ride.

Bring gifts or flowers.  This is a bit on the creepy side and can seem overwhelming on a first date.  Save these for the second date or any time when you have gotten to know each other better.

Involve surprises.   While it may seem romantic to plan a date that is a big surprise, remember that you are both really nervous.  It is much better to save the cool surprise dates for later in your relationship.

Do...

Find a cool place to go.  A memorable first date should be at a location that is unique.  Why go to Red Lobster when you can go to the local mom n' pop seafood joint?  

Clean up and look pretty.  Be sure to be looking your best.   Do all the little things you would do to make yourself as good looking as possible.  Remember that some people are allergic to perfumes and colognes, so go light or do not wear any at all.

Have a plan.  Leave yourself plenty of time to get to your date location.  Being there way early is better than arriving late.   Call the restaurant that you are planning on visiting to be sure the wait is not too long or put in a reservation if you can.  Planning equals low stress and everyone wants a first date to have less stress!

Give a warm welcome.  Read your date's body language to see whether a handshake is appropriate or your date is hug friendly!  If you met your date online, do not forget to say how great it is to meet them in person.

Have conversation starters.  Keep a few ideas in your pocket to pull out in case of awkward gaps in the conversation.  Anything fun to keep the conversation flowing!

Wrap it up.  Let your date know how you thought the evening went and go ahead and plan a second date if you get the feeling that they are interested in you as much as you are in them.  Thank them for a great time and give them a hug (or kiss!) goodnight.

Remember that a first date is not a commitment.  It is not a contract.  There are no promises.  Think of it like a fun job interview.  You are getting to know one another and seeing if you get along and are compatible.  If you are not, no harm!   If you are then it is time to plan that second date!

The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, produced in 2004 by Icon Productions, and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus, is a vivid depiction of the easter story – the last twelve hours of Jesus' life on Earth. It is a powerful film based on a powerful story presenting the meaning of Easter.

The Passion of the Christ is an accurate depiction of the story of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection found in the four gospels. The movie does not take a particular denominational view of the Easter story, but demonstrates what the gospels have to say about it. This quality of unbiased depiction of a story contributes to the film's success, along with a brilliant performance by Jim Caviezel as Jesus.

Along with depicting the gospels' crucifixion story, The Passion of the Christ includes flashbacks into Jesus' life and shows them in a way that makes it seem as though they are from Jesus' thoughts. These flashbacks give an interesting dimension to the story and allow for a sliver of lightheartedness in an otherwise tear-jerking and serious film. In addition, the entire film is in Aramaic with subtitles, which makes it an authentic viewing experience.

The focus of The Passion of the Christ is on the crucifixion of jesus, and as such, includes a degree of violence not recommended for weak stomachs. For full impact of the story on the audience, the film leaves out nothing of the crucifixion. It is as though the movie was designed to enlighten the audience on the horrors of crucifixion and the sacrifice that was made. It is not a horror film, however, and also presents hope and faith through the sacrifice of Jesus, just as the gospel stories do.

As accurate and powerful the depiction of the Jesus' crucifixion is in the film, The Passion of the Christ lacks in portraying the resurrection of Jesus. It is understood that the intent of the movie is to illustrate the crucifixion of Jesus and it does this well. But most of the wonder of the gospels' Easter story is the resurrection of Jesus. While the gospels put as much or more importance on jesus' resurrection as they do on His death, The Passion of the Christ does not. While the gospels' story celebrates His resurrection, the film emphasizes His death.

Bollywood Movies: Going Against the Wind!

The increasing popularity of Bollywood could be seen in the fact that the tickets in the multiplexes get booked even before the films are released. Its craze could be seen in every nook and corner of India.

Bollywood Cinemas came in India on July 7 1896, when at the Watkins Hotel in downtown Bombay, the short films of the Lumiére brothers were shown. It became a huge hit among the audience. Then again in the year 1913, DG Phalke went on to London on a trip, where he got inspired by movie named “The Life of Christ”. After returning back to India this successful painter made the nation’s first feature film Raja Harishchandra, which was scantly based on Indian religious epic The Mahabharata. Zeitgeist: A Movie For The Time

Since June 2007, the movie "ZEITGEIST" has been taking the internet by storm. As of December 2007, ZEITGEIST had already gathered more than 6 million hits, making it one of the most popular online videos of all time. In fact, on Google video, ZEITGEIST was the no. 1 video for the months of November and December 2007, and there doesn't seem to be any stopping it. The movie's creator, Peter Joseph, has reported some 40,000 to 60,000 hits to his website, ZEITGEISTmovie.com, per day! Also, in November 2007, ZEITGEIST was presented a "Best Feature" award at the prestigious Artivists Film Festival at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood. As one of the sources for Part 1 of ZEITGEIST, I was in attendance as a featured panel speaker addressing some 650 people, who shared a mind-blowing evening. Both Peter and I have also done several radio programs addressing the subjects raised in ZEITGEIST, with me specializing in Part 1. The movie's narration has also been translated into a number of languages, including German. Truly, ZEITGEIST is a global phenomenon!

What is so special about ZEITGEIST that it has attracted so much attention? First of all, the movie is done in a very powerful manner - and, secondly, its message is controversial, to say the least! Since my work inspired some of Part 1, I can only discuss as an expert that segment, which deals with religious conspiracy. Part 1, in fact, claims that our modern religions, including and especially Christianity, are not "original" or "new revelation" but remakes of ancient faiths, particularly that of the Egyptians. In my books, "The christ conspiracy" and "Suns of God," I have striven to demonstrate that fact, with a combined 1000+ pages of fascinating research as to the true meaning of religion. Mind Movies - A Christian Perspective

Well if you spend any time online you will be familiar with the term "mind movie". They have gained enormous popularity on YouTube.com and fall into the category of self-help resources that are somewhat of the pop psychology category.

This genre of psuedo spirituality holds the "Universe" as the responsible agent of your destiny, along the same line of thought that movie "The Secret" and the book, "Law of Attraction" also suggest. The basic premise is that whatever you put out to the universe, you will be given back due to the certain vibrations you emit.

If you emit negative vibes, then you will get a negative dose back due you according to the measure you first gave out. God is not seen as in control, but just a benign universal servant. Of course if you vibe out the correct positive vibrations and thoughts then this is what you get back, and naturally this is what everyone is interested in doing, getting the good things in life that they are pursuing.

So what could be wrong with that I hear you say? Surely God wants us to have all the good things he has created for us and so this must be a good thing, therefore mind movie must be a good thing?

Lets take a look at what the Bible says along these lines of thought and how it effects our outcomes. The first verse that springs to mind that would seem to indicate a self-fulfilling nature would have to be,

"As a man thinks so he is", Proverbs 23:7

This verse is very profound and holds the truth in human psychology that many new age teachings have borrowed from.

In essence the body and life is guided by the thoughts that originate in our minds. All actions are preceded by thoughts. In fact even certain actions that most people would consider unconscious or subconscious, like speaking for example all involve thoughts first.

The fact that a negative thinking person is more likely to achieve negative outcomes should come as no surprise to most people of average intelligence. You think something is not going to work, and then you go about consciously and subconsciously trying to prove this, so that in the end you can say to yourself - "see I told you I couldn't do it!"

The opposite can be true as well, a person of positive persuasion will equally pursue the actions that are going to lead to the fulfilment of what they believe to be true.

For example a person training for a fun run such as the Sydney City To Surf, who believed in their mind that they were capable of making the distance to cross the finish line at Bondi beach, is going to understand that they need to prepare for the race by doing some training.

All the while amidst the pain of those hill climbs the person is thinking about the positive result of their training, being able to finish the race in a respectable time. They see themselves achieving their goal, and so they set about to prove it to themselves. As a man thinks...

So from a psychological point of view, this foundational principle would seem to be true, but as Christian person we need to look a little closer to the pagan or occult thought behind the whole "Universe" mumbo jumbo.

God Controls the Universe Not the Other Way Round

Christians believe that God created the universe and was there before the beginning so the thought of having this created thing having a power that can be manipulated to ones own end should be somewhat concerning for the Christian person.

The Bible teaches us to surrender our wills to God's will and allow him to direct our lives in the direction of making Christ Lord over all. So the notion that somehow we can override this by a mind movie, should also raise some concern. Does that mean that a Christian cannot use a mind movie to help them achieve things that otherwise would be made more difficult?

The answer to that question could lie in another area of scripture that Jesus mentions in Mark 11:223,24 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." If you believe and do not doubt then it will be done for you.

Admittedly this verse makes a direct connection to prayer and by support of other passages in scripture we understand that this relates to the asking of God and his benevolent response and answer to our prayers. That being said, it still strikes as rather odd that Jesus would use such an example to prove this point about belief being the major contributing factor in the equation, especially when you consider that the throwing of a mountain into the sea, apart from a volcanic eruption such as Mount Krakatoa, would hardly seem to be something that would formulate part of God's will for a Christian to be seeking.

Do Our Minds Hold an Untapped Power?

Does this passage suggest to us something more? Something that indicates a power that our minds have that is untapped? Another area of consideration would have to be the field of medicine and the effects that positive thought has on the successful outcomes of patients surviving terminal illnesses. It is widely documented that the positive thinking patient does better than the ones resigned to the fact of their demise.

Now suppose we took that thought power and put it into overdrive with a mind movie, this could explain some of the amazing reports of success in relationships, business and personal development that can be found around the Internet in forums and video sharing sites.

It does get difficult for the Christian when you consider what some people are reporting their mind movies have done for them. This is where a Christian considering the practise of creating a mind movie and watching regularly either on screen or in variably in one's mind, which where it is intended to play over and over, needs to plan carefully and prayerfully.

For the Christian creating a mind movie that rejoices in God's goodness as an act of worship, there can be no uncertainty here of blurring the lines between what is an acceptable practise and what may be considered an occult practise.

Positive messages about our God, families, friends, goals in our ministry or business if it be to the glory of God, these could hardly be considered a false or a misleading way to conduct or control our minds. Another scripture reminds of this,

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.", Philippians 4:8

But if we are to set up a mind movie that is attempting to take control where we know we should not be seeking it, this I believe is where we would be stepping over the line and should show restraint.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.", I Corinthians 10:31

Questions about post second-coming life?

A few things about what the bible says will happen after Jesus comes again don't add up for me. Was wondering if anyone can explain.

-Is the book of life an actual book? Why can't it be a laptop, or DVD of life?
-Why will everyone wear crowns and walk on streets of gold? Some fashion minded people may consider this a bit gaudy.
-Will Heaven be broken up and diversified? People like to live in areas that exhibit their own culture (clothing, architecture, etc.). Will there be a Heavenly Chinatown? Will there be forced hegemony?
-When people return to the new Earth, will there still be deserts? Deserts are, by and large, harsh regions in which humans must struggle to live.. but millions have lived there and consider them beautiful.
-Will there be sports? How do you lose a game if you're perfect?

I don't mean to waste your time with my total lack of an answer, but I just wanted to say that this is a pretty cool question. I never really though about it in quite this way before, but I love this sort of thing. I will definitely be giving it a lot of thought in the future!
