Six Keys to Feeling Closer to Your Spouse
Cleaving to each other is an important concept in building a solid marriage foundation. According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the word cleave means "to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwavering". In other words, when you cleave to each other you are glued or bonded together. A relationship that is closely bonded does not come apart easily.
How Do You Cleave to Each Other?
Here are six keys found in the word "C.L.E.A.V.E.":
C: Commit to Your Marriage
Make a commitment that your marriage is your first priority. Decide that you will do everything within your power to build a successful marriage.
L: Loyalty To Your Spouse First
It can be a blessing to have a close relationship with your parents or siblings. You still love and care about them even after you get married. However, your relationship with them should change. Your first main concern should be your mate, then your family.
E: Emotional Bond
Work on ways to bond closer to your mate. Spend time together, romance each other, have mutual projects and goals, etc.
A: Agree to Work Out Your Problems Together
Every couple has issues than have to be resolved. Work on finding equitable solutions for both of you. You both may have to compromise, but the investment you make in your marriage pays off in great dividends.
V: Ventilate to a Neutral Party, Not Your Parents
Be careful how much information you share about your marriage issues, especially with your parents. They tend to take your side in an argument and may get angry at your spouse for hurting their "baby". Their anger may even feed more into your anger. Then the situation escalates beyond the original problem.
If you need to talk about your problems, find a neutral third party.
E: Enjoy Each Other
When was the last time the two of you did something fun together? Too often couples get so busy with life that they quit enjoying each other's company. Taking time to enjoy each other is another way to keep your emotional bond strong.
