Hello - God to Earth - Knock Knock

Copyright (c) 2008 Mary Ann Boulette

Often in my life when I have had both my eyes and ears closed, God has had to hit me over the head in order to get my attention. When He does get through, it is usually an amazing experience and that is what happened this last weekend.

I have a whole side of my mother's family that over the years I have lost touch with and there has been sadness in me because of it. And yet, for whatever reason, I have done nothing about it. I have 3 first cousins who at one time were an important part of my life. My mother and I would go every other summer to Pennsylvania and spend a month or more visiting everyone and spending time at my grandpap's old house in the middle of the woods surrounded by coal mines long ago closed down. After my mother and my aunt died, my cousins and I would talk every Christmas Eve -- it was a family tradition started by our mothers years before -- a tradition which for whatever reason just stopped in the early 90's and I have not done my part to reach out to my cousins in 16 years.

Now, I am fast approaching my 60th birthday, and I have been experiencing for want of a better term, a mid life crisis (or perhaps its just menopause run amok). It has something to do with realizing that I am closer to the end of my days than the beginning and this realization has had a philosophical effect on me. I have been searching for a way to fill up small holes in my heart and soul by beginning to write again, and having made other changes in my life, but still finding something missing. There has been an uneasy in me as if I am being told that something gigantic is going to happen and I need to prepare for it.

For the last month with the attention of our country focused on the Pennsylvania primary those feelings have only grown stronger. Seeing and hearing about places I have been to and that were a part of my youth, opened a flood gate of emotions that I was not sure how to deal with or even what was really causing all this unrest.

Then this past week, Pope Benedict came to the US on what some were calling his Tour of Reconciliation. After hearing His Holiness speak on the value of being part of a family, I knew that I had to find every one of the cousins that I spent summers with and I needed to do it now.

Early Saturday morning, I logged on to the internet and spent time finding phone numbers. I only found 2 but after spending two hours on the phone with my cousin Bruce (who was a toddler when I last saw him) I had more phone numbers and before I went to bed, I called and talked to most of my family. What is really strange is that they each told me that the day before, they had been thinking about me and remembering my mother -- see God was working on their side also. So, after 16 years, I have most of my family back and there are third cousins and fourth cousins -- members of my family I have never met nor even knew about.

My point in telling this story is to open a dialogue with as many people as possible on how our mobile society has separated families by many miles and often years. The foundation of our society begins in the family and that foundation is broken or at the very least cracked. I believe that before this country can repair our economy or our foreign policy, or any of the major problems facing us, we need to rebuild the foundation our nation was built on -- the foundation of family and community, as these are two of the major principles that our country was founded on. It is a time for rebuilding our nation but with a cracked foundation our people and our country can not get back to where it needs to be. Until we get back to our roots and stop our moral compass from spinning uncontrollably, we can never get our country right with the rest of the world.

So, if you haven't talked or visited your families lately -- pick up the phone, or write a letter -- anything to strengthen that bond. Then we can all move forward together to fix the many problems this great land of ours is facing. Perhaps we can even get back to a place and time where everyone knows their neighbors, and family time doesn't revolve around the television. All our modern conveniences have made us forget the human touch, like writing a thank you note, sitting out in the backyard in the early evening just talking, saying hi to the postman, and the feeling of security that the sense of community brings. We need to relearn how to stop and just listen to the simple sound of silence.

Our country has been going down the wrong road for so long now and it is time to take the path less traveled again instead of continuing to recklessly speed down the super highway that eventually will just lead us and our country nowhere.

And finally, to my family -- I am so very sorry that I have been so wrapped up in my own life that I forgotten about you. I hope you can forgive me and I promise all of you (you all as we say in Texas) that it will never happen again -- for we share a common heritage and we all came from the same young couple who immigrated to the United States so many years ago.

The Regensberg Speech of Pope Benedict

The Regensberg Speech of Pope Benedict

Muslims have been greatly offended by references made about Islam in a speech that Pope Benedict XVI delivered on September 12 at the University of Regensberg entitled "Faith, Reason and the University – Memories and Reflections" Muslims were insulted by the speech's misrepresentation of Islam as a religion that is spread through violence.

The Vatican defended the speech claiming that the Pope was merely quoting the words of Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus from a medieval ****. In the Vatican's official statement of 16 September, it reads: "As for the opinion of the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus which he quoted during his Regensburg talk, the Holy Father did not mean, nor does he mean, to make that opinion his own in any way."

In the Pope's subsequent apology, he apologizes for the reaction that Muslims had to his speech and affirms that the views of Emperor Manuel II do not reflect his own, saying: "At this time, I wish also to add that I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims. These in fact were a quotation from a medieval ****, which do not in any way express my personal thought."

However, many Muslims do not consider this explanation and apology to be sufficient. For one thing, it only addresses the quotation form Emperor Manuel II, though the misrepresentations of Islam contained in the speech are not limited to that quote. Also, his apology is merely for the Muslim's reaction and not for any fault in the speech itself.

To understand this better, we need to look carefully at the key paragraphs of the speech – paragraphs three and four – and clarify what about them Muslims find offensive:

Here is paragraph three of that speech:

In the seventh conversation edited by Professor Khoury, the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: "There is no compulsion in religion". According to the experts, this is one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur'an, concerning holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached". The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God", he says, "is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death...".

As we can see, this paragraph is not merely a quotation of a passage from a medieval ****. The quoted words of the Emperor form only a part of it, and much of what is offensive and inaccurate in this paragraph is not from that quotation, but from the words of Pope Benedict XVI himself.

The Pope introduces the quote by mentioning that the Emperor must have known the verse of the Qur'ân that reads "There is no compulsion in religion." This is a claim being made by the Pope. He then goes on to assert on the basis of some "experts" that this verse was revealed in the early days when Islam was weak. He then goes on to say that the verses relating to "Holy War" came later.

These are the Pope's words. They are inaccurate and their implications are sinister. They are inaccurate because the verse "There is no compulsion in religion" was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Madinah when Islam was at its most powerful. The Pope's words imply that the verse which declares there is no compulsion in religion was only for the early days of Islam and was replaced with more militant injunctions when Islam grew stronger. Again, this implication does not come from something quoted from Emperor, but from the words of the Pope.

Here, the Pope needs to clarify that Islam does not preach violence against non-Muslims and that Muslims do not advocate spreading Islam through violence, since this is the implication of his own words. Therefore, this is something that he has to either explain or retract, and it is something about which Muslims feel he should apologize.

After Pope Benedict XVI makes these observations about the verses of the Qur'ân, only then does he begin quoting the words of the Byzantine Emperor, which include the statement: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached"

He makes no effort to distance himself from this statement or t show that he disagrees with it, which is something that a man of his position should have taken pains to do, especially after preceding this quote with the introduction that he gave.

It is good that the Pope has now made it clear that the words of the Byzantine Emperor do not reflect his own views. However, more is needed. He needs to apologize for his poor choice of words that lead listeners to believe that he supports the Emperor's idea that Islam advocates the spread of faith through violence. He also needs to clarify his preceding statements about the verses of the Qur'an – statements which are inaccurate and which imply the same negative meaning as the Emperor's.

We will now look at paragraph four:

The decisive statement in this argument against violent conversion is this: not to act in accordance with reason is contrary to God's nature. The editor, Theodore Khoury, observes: For the emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by Greek philosophy, this statement is self-evident. But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality. Here Khoury quotes a work of the noted French Islamist R. Arnaldez, who points out that Ibn Hazn went so far as to state that God is not bound even by his own word, and that nothing would oblige him to reveal the truth to us. Were it God's will, we would even have to practise idolatry.

We should note that in this paragraph the Pope does not quote the Byzantine Emperor at all. Here he quotes from the comments made by Theodore Khoury, the editor of the Emperor's writings, which are being cited as an analysis of those writings. The statement of Khoury that he quotes here seeks to explain the difference in attitude between the Emperor and the Muslims towards violence by saying that Muslims do not subject God to the dictates of reason.

At this point, it would have been necessary for the Pope to state his disagreement with Khoury's general statements about Islam. He needed to clarify that the views being expressed about Muslim beliefs by Khoury and those supposedly held by the "educated Persian" are not representative of the beliefs of the vast majority of Muslims. As it stands, paragraph four merely reinforces the idea that the Emperor's views about violence and those of the Muslims are in actuality opposing views.

The fact is, Muslims agree with the Emperor's words: "Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death"

This is the very idea enshrined in the Qur'ân – in the verse that the Pope wrongfully dismisses – where Allah says: "There is no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah hears and knows all things." [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 256]

Therefore, a clearer apology is needed from the Pope where he at least admits to having chosen his words incorrectly, and where he makes it clear that he is not advancing the idea that Islam espouses irrational violence as a means of spreading the faith.

We as Muslims need to make clear exactly what grievances we have with the Pope's speech. We need to be precise in what we say and show where the Pope's speech was in error. In doing so, we need to take the opportunity to explain the true, peaceful teachings of Islam and to call people to Islam. We must restrain our anger. We must avoid all acts of violence and impropriety, conduct which only serve to advance the falsehood that Islam is a violent religion. We must also understand that though demonstrations and protests communicate to the world the anger that the Muslims feel, they do not explain to the world exactly what was wrong with the Pope's statements or why his apology is insufficient. What is needed is for us to speak calmly and convey a clear, well-reasoned message.

And Allah knows best.

Does Change Always Change Minds?

The U.S. population in 2009 had increased more than 9% to 307,006,550 since the 2000 census. In 2009's Census Bureau's annual population estimates, the population grew .86% in one year. Regarding individual states, Texas added the most people - 478,000. California was second with 381,000 and North Carolina was third with 134,000. Wyoming had the highest growth rate at 2.12%, followed by Utah with 2.1% and Texas with 1.97%. Michigan, Maine and Rhode Island shrank in population - by .33%, .11% and .03% respectively. However, one state undoubtedly caused many of the changes - the state of the economy.

The U.S. Department of Transportation finally imposed new regulations regarding tarmac delays after 613 planes were delayed more than 3 hours from January to June 2009. As of April 20, 2010 domestic flights will have to provide tarmac-stranded passengers with food and water within 2 hours, as well as working lavatories and medical attention when necessary. After 3 hours passengers must be allowed to disembark except when there are safety or security issues or air traffic control says returning to the terminal would disrupt airport operations. Hopefully, those exceptions won't become loopholes big enough for planes to get through.

D-Box Technologies has designed a new movie seat - a seat that does more than provide a cup holder and recline. The new seat, which debuted in some theaters during the 2009 Christmas season, provides 3 types of movement during the feature presentation. The seats move forward and backward, side to side and up and down. Although the movements are supposedly gentle, these seats are not recommended for pregnant women; people with heart, back or neck problems; people drinking hot beverages; and children under 10 without parental supervision. Nevertheless, it seems that even bad movies can now be a moving experience.

Even religion is experiencing technological changes. For example, there are over 2 dozen Bible application programs for smart phones. There is also an iRosary app that provides rosary beads and a prayer book. The Web site Lifechurch.tv brings worship services to about 60,000 computer screens a week. The Web site AskMoses allows people to talk with a Jewish scholar every day except the Sabbath and holidays. Even Pope Benedict XVI has a Web site. Pope2You's content is translated from Italian into English, French, German and Spanish. Of course, people who use smart phones and/or computers 24/7 are already using technology "religiously".

Leadership Characteristics - The 5 Practises Of Excellent Leadership

Leadership characteristics are extremely relevant as this is the first of three key success factors in change management. They have been extensively researched by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Their groundbreaking studies, commenced in 1983 with the driver that they wanted to find out what people did when they were at their "personal best" in leading others - i.e. to identify the characteristics of good leadership.

They devised a leadership characteristics survey consisting of thirty-eight open-ended questions designed to capture "Personal Best" stories of peak leadership experience.

The research was conducted over 15 years with 75,000 people, on a worldwide basis and included middle and senior level managers in private and public sector organisations, community leaders, student leaders, church leaders, government leaders, and hundreds of others in non-managerial positions.

The last study was conducted in 2002 and the prioritised list of leadership characteristics is as follows:

1.    Honest 88%
2.    Forward-Looking 71%
3.    Competent 65%
4.    Inspiring 66%
5.    Intelligent 35%
6.    Fair-minded 47%
7.    Broad-minded 40%
8.    Supportive 42%
9.    Straightforward 34%
10.    Dependable 33%
11.    Co-operative 24%
12.    Determined 20%
13.    Imaginative 23%
14.    Ambitious 17%
15.    Courageous 28%
16.    Caring 21%
17.    Mature 20%
18.    Loyalty 14%
19.    Self-Controlled 8%
20.    Independent 6%

It is interesting to note that these figures have remained largely consistent over the full 15 years of research. The results of this research and subsequent analysis of leadership characteristics has led them to the defining of the 5 practices of excellent leadership and which are crucial in change management

In summary they found that despite differences in the circumstances and details of people's individual stories, their "personal-best" leadership experiences revealed recurring and similar patterns of behaviour in their descriptions of the characteristics of good leadership.

(1) Showing the Way

Leaders define and establish principles about the way people should be treated and the way goals should be pursued. Leaders set the benchmark by creating standards of excellence and then demonstrate these standards in their own behaviour and thus establishing an example for others to follow.

They recognise that people can become overwhelmed by large scale, complex and/or long term goals, and so they set interim objectives that encourage easier "early wins".

Leaders also untangle unnecessary bureaucracy and give their people clear unambiguous pointers to successfully achieving goals. They create the environment in which people can succeed.

(2) Creating a Shared Vision

Leaders have a clear and passionately held vision of what the changed organisation can become. They have the skills and energy to enthuse and inspire people to share that vision, and also to see and get excited about the future possibilities.

(3) Challenging the Way Things Are

Leaders are challenging and seek out opportunities to challenge and change the status quo. They seek innovation and improvement in the organisation, and are prepared to experiment, to take risks and to accept the inevitable failures as part of the the learning experience.

(4) Empowering and Encouraging People to Act

Leaders are enablers and empower people by involving them and believing in them. They engender mutual respect and trust and in so doing motivate their people to extraordinary effort and achievement.

(5) Addressing the Emotional Dimension

Leaders know that extraordinary achievement in an organisation is very hard work. They also know that emotional dimension is extremely important. So they regularly acknowledge their people's achievements and celebrate team and individual accomplishments, and is so doing they make their people feel good about themselves.

All of these are qualities and practises that make for successful leadership in change management initiatives.

Naznet Nixes The Saved = Pronto Heaven

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Apostle Paul writes: “We are confident. . .to be absent from the body (is) to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8

NazNet moderator Hans Deventer states that when one dies the soul goes into an “intermediate state,” whatever that means. The saved soul, per Deventer, does not go “to be present with the Lord.”

Deventer does not mind discounting the Bible. When in his whim, he does so frequently on NazNet.

Yet NazNet is represented as “friend” to the Church of the Nazarene, per web site founder Dave McClung. That church does not teach an “intermediate state” upon death.

The Church of the Nazarene has always held to the biblical data of the saved going immediately to heaven and the unsaved going immediately to hell.

Deventer makes up his anti-Bible “theology” as he goes along his moderator trail. He posts that he does not believe the Bible, for instance. What he does believe in that Book deals only with Jesus' mercy for obviously Hans wants to go where Jesus is when Deventer dies.

However, because Deventer contradicts himself throughout NazNet, upon death he cannot go where Jesus is until Deventer first passes through his “intermediate state.”

By the way, Deventer posts on NazNet that the unsaved souls are annihilated. However, once again confusion reigns. Does the unsaved soul first go to an “intermediate state” before being annihilated?

Deventer discounts such biblical warnings concerning hell: Matthew 5:22, 29, 30; 7:13; 10:28; 13:38-42, 49-50;  23:15, 33; 25:28-41, 46; Mark 9:43-47; Luke 12:5; 16:23-26; II Thessalonians 1:9; James 3:6; II Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6; Revelation 1:18; 6:8; 9:1-2, 14:10-11; 19:20; 20:10, 13-15; 21:8.

Does McClung do anything about Deventer's heresies? No. McClung permits them to remain on NazNet.

Yet McClung is esteemed by the Church of the Nazarene as an outstanding wealthy layman, even appointing him to prestigious denominational boards as well as one-time President of Eastern Nazarene
College, Quincy, MA.

The sad picture then comes into focus: McClung has ingratiated himself politically into the ecclesiastical machine so as to be permitted trashing the Bible as well as destroying the denominational foundations.

In short, politics counts more than biblical truth. Just another travesty of these confusing religious times.

What's the difference between the Catholic and Christian Church?

Because on Wikipedia it says that 'The Roman Catholic Church or Catholic Church (see Terminology below) is the Christian Church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, currently Pope Benedict XVI. It traces its origins and sees itself as the same Church founded by Jesus of Nazareth and maintained through Apostolic Succession from the Twelve Apostles.' So wouldn't Catholic and Christian be the same? Also why do the Simpson's think that the Catholic Church is bad?

It is really sad what some people think the Church to be. I see so many false answers on this. see some of my other answers if you want a clearer picture.

"there are not 100 people who hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they think it to be" Archbishop fulton sheen

Yes Catholics are Christian and yes their church is the first church.
Someone wrote Christianity is not buildings I've heard that claim before and the answer sounds good at first but why do they really phrase it like this? because they are attempting to misled others into believing the Catholic Church is only buildings without spiritual content. Lets reverse this shall we, Christianity is also buildings and architecture and sacred art because they are all an expression of our love for God. The real reason these are denied by those who don't have them is simply because they don't have a history. These buildings are a historical record an archelogy of where the true Church can be found. There are no non-Catholic Christian structures or records or art or even bibles prior to the 16th century. During early Christianity you find the regular usage of visual artwork to tell the gospel story. Not everyone could read and not everyone could afford to have a bible copied for their private use the buildings themselves were the gospel story.

I could go on and on but this is already an extremely long answer for yahoo, I would like to say getting answers from this forum will never satisfy see my sources below. For the people claiming the teaching of purgatory and other doctrine aren't in the bible they are you've not been taught know to recognize them, and purgatory is not a Catholic creation the first covenant peoples the Isaelites also believed in a purification of those who have physically dead see: kaddish prayer.

Ferret Theory XVI

‘Eddie, gets caught in the crossfire… between the…

‘French Connection:’ or is it? The ‘French Seduction:!’

While driving The ‘Navy’s Destroyer,’ across the line of death, that ‘Omar Gaddafi,’ had drawn for the ‘USS. America Battle Group?’ Eddie, remembers; “being the first of the USS. America, Battle Group, ships! To cross the line, of death in Libya!”

The ship, even made T-shirts about it being the first…

The Navy; started working on Eddie’s, weapons skills, on board his ship? The ‘Weapons Department,’ started to learn fast! That, I, was versatile with any weapon. The “Weaps,” said “your shooting score! Is the best onboard the ship.” Weaps, is what they called the-

‘Weapons Officer,’ Onboard ship?’

I, told ‘Weaps,’ I’ve been an arms shooter, since age seven? Weaps, was impressed! That, I had skills, in the ‘arts of weaponry! I started taking classes; [of hand to hand combat, on the ship] and express my, interest in being the ships--

‘Security Force,’ team member!’

After a few run-ins, with ‘Libyan patrol boats.‘ I would express myself, to those ‘Libyan provokers,’ what our ships intentions where? That, they were in the way! The Libyan Force, never came back after that! I was starting to lose interest, in patrolling the Libyan, coast due to boredom? And was looking for new adventure…

“Which was yet to come!!!”

Sure enough!… I was scheduled to pull into ‘port,’ in Saint Rafael, France. Where… I would see, ‘topless women’ at public beaches, for the first time in my life! I would rent a ‘paddle boat’ and patrol the beach! WOW!--what a job!-- I would stack my ‘paddle boat,’ full of …

‘French bottles of wine and love and serenade to the beautiful French ladies, of France!’

I just couldn’t, believe my eyes! Some of the most beautiful women, in the world? ‘The things they would wear and what not! “Along the coast of the French Riviera!” I know, the ‘French Guard’ and the ‘American Shore Patrol,’ didn’t care to much for my enthusiasm at times?

I felt, it was my ‘civic duty,’ to protect these beautiful ladies, of France, from the Libyans!

“I couldn’t believe, there was a place, like this on our planet?”

It felt like there, weren’t many ‘laws’ govern, what the attire was for women? It had a ‘free feeling, in the air about it! Yes, a nice, yet, pleasant feeling?’ Different, then the American women, today! Not that it’s bad? What the American women are doing? It was just different is all! It was an experience, I’ll never forget! I would not trade it for the world… When, I worked at night, on the ship. I would play, ‘Journey’ music and think of “French Ladies of Saint Rafael and Toulon!”

[ My actions, may have been miss-understood some of the time. But I was feeling, the ‘French Connection,’ possibly even the ‘French Seduction!’]

Now… I hope the viewers, doesn’t get bitter? But I was definitely hypnotized by the beauty of France! I was only 19, years old at the time?

The Summer of 86.’

Sincerely,

Eddie
