Assumption of Mary

Assumption of Mary

How old is the belief in the Assumption of Mary?

Did early Christians really believe in the Assumption of Mary into Heaven? You'd be surprised to discover that it has been the belief of the early Church members that our great God who is never outdone in generosity was most generous to the real Ark of the Covenant - Mary, and never let her body be defiled by earthly rot.

Is the Assumption of Mary in the Bible? Definitely not. And neither is the word, Trinity, mentioned in the Bible! Both these Catholic Christian teachings found in the Bible, if you let the Holy Spirit teach you through the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

On this Assumption of Mary Feast Day, I reproduce here some thoughts from the early Church. This was written by Nicols Cabasilas (1322/23).

It was fitting that the Virgin should share in every aspect of her Son's providential care for us. Just as she had bestowed her flesh and blood on him and had received a share of his graces in return, so in like manner she also participated in all his pains and sufferings.

'When his side was wounded by the lance as he hung on the cross a sword pierced his Mother's heart, as saintly Simeon had foretold. And so, after our Saviour's death, she was the first to conform herself to the Son who resembled her, and hence she shared in his resurrection before all others.

When her Son had broken the tyranny of death by rising from the grave, the Virgin saw him and heard his salutation; and when the time came for him to depart for heaven, she escorted him on his way, as far as she could.

Finally, when he had gone away. she took his place among the apostles, uniting them: lf with the other companions of our Saviour by means of her good works, through which she benefited the whole human race. She more truly than anyone else made up what was lacking in christ; for who could more fittingly do so than his Mother?

Now it was necessary for her most holy soul to be separated from her hallowed body; and it was indeed released and united with the soul of her Son, the second light with the first.

For a short time her body remained upon earth and then it too departed. It had to go everywhere the Saviour had gone, and to shed its light on both the living and the dead. It had to sanctity nature in every respect; then, at last, it could take its appointed place.

And so the grave received it for a short time, but heaven soon took from the grave that new earth, that spiritual body, that treasury of our life, more revered than the angels, holier than the archangels.

His throne was restored to the King, paradise to the tree of life, the sun's orb to the light, the tree to its fruit, the Mother to her Son; for in every respect she was in accord with her Child.

o blessed one, what words can adequately praise your virtue, or the graces you received from our Saviour for the benefit of the whole human race? It would be impossible to do so even if one could speak in the tongues of humans and of angels, to use the words of Paul.

It seems to me that part of the eternal happiness in store for the righteous will be really to know and proclaim your graces in a fitting way. For these no eye bas seen nor ear heard. To use the noble John's words: The world cannot contain them.

The only theatre in which your marvellous gifts can fittingly be displayed is the new heaven and the new earth where the sun is the sun of Righteousness whom darkness neither precedes nor follows. The Savior himself will proclaim your worth, and the angels will applaud.

Celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary in joy, because that's your future, if you do God's will on earth.

The History of Diamonds and Their Use in Diamond Jewellery

When it comes to history, diamonds have a very long and fascinating record as one of the most intriguing gemstones on the planet. You may be familiar with the term, ‘Diamonds are Forever’, made popular by the De Beers advertising campaigns and for good reason. Forged billions of years ago, long before dinosaurs roamed the planet, they have survived the forces of nature to reach us. They have been used throughout the ages as bearers of mystic powers and incredible beauty. Through the centuries they have been revered and admired by many civilisations.

Part of the credit for the almost mythical reverence to diamonds throughout the years belongs to the fact that these beauties are quite rare in their most sought after gemstone quality form. Not only are these diamonds rare in numbers but also in the number of skilled artisans that can compliment their exquisite beauty.

Diamonds are the hardest of precious stones. The word “diamond” itself is a derivative of the Greek word adamas, which means “unconquerable”. It is the undiminished beauty of diamonds that has made them so highly prized throughout several centuries. This does not mean that a diamond cannot be damaged only that they are difficult to damage requiring a very precise strike in an exact location in order to damage the surface.

It is believed that the first diamonds were discovered nearly 3000 years ago in India. They were considered valuable because of their ability to refract light and were used as either decoration or as talismans - for protection and warding against evil.

During the Dark Ages, diamonds were believed to hold medicinal value. There were instructions that those suffering illnesses or having wounds should hold a diamond in the hand and make a sign of the cross for healing. Some even believed that ingesting diamonds could assist in recovery (and even a cure) from various illnesses.

As time progressed into the Middle Ages, diamonds were more often viewed as items of value rather than items of mystical healing powers. As a result of the growing demand and value of diamonds, mine owners began spreading rumours that diamonds were poisonous if swallowed. This prevented workers in the mines from swallowing the diamonds for the purpose of smuggling.

Today, India suffers from a relatively depleted supply of diamonds. Smaller finds have been discovered in Borneo and Brazil, though nothing as significant as those reserves once found in India.

Diamonds were discovered in South Africa by a child playing with brightly coloured stones by a river in 1866. One of the stones was recognised to be a diamond and the gem cut from it was appropriately named "Eureka". This created a massive diamond rush and the start of a new beginning for diamonds. Diamonds mined in South Africa still continue to make up a large percentage of the world’s diamond jewellery, though there are gem quality diamonds that are being discovered all the time in other countries around the world.

More recently, Australia has become a contender when it comes to the production and mining of exquisite gem quality diamonds. Other countries for diamond mining include Africa, Canada, Russia, and South America in addition to those mined in Australia.

One thing that is worth noting is that the vast majority of diamonds discovered around the world are not gem quality stones. In fact, only about one fifth of the diamonds that are mined are diamonds that are considered to be gem quality. Those that are not considered to be gem quality are used for drilling and similar applications.

Diamonds are not all clear either – the stones come in many colours; the least common of the colours red. They are very rare. Coloured diamonds command huge prices and are highly prized by collectors.

Diamond rings are today considered to be a token of love, particularly when given to one by a suitor. The tradition of diamond engagement rings being used for engagements is believed to have begun when Austria’s Archduke Maximilian made a gift of a diamond ring upon his engagement to Mary of Burgundy.

The wearing of a diamond ring on the ring finger, or fourth finger of the left hand, is derived from the ancient Egyptians. This is due to their belief that the vein that extends from this particular finger to the heart is also the “vein of love”. This tradition is still practiced today, much like the giving of a diamond ring as a symbol of engagement and true love.

Most people associate the wearing of diamonds to rings for engagement to be married. There are plenty of occasions that warrant diamonds and diamond pendants, diamond bracelets and diamond earrings make excellent choices for marking a special occasion or memorable life moment. Remember, diamonds have for quite a while been (and will certainly continue to be) a girl’s best friend. Any celebration that is cause for joy is an excellent occasion for a gift of diamonds.

Among such occasions to be considered are: a girl’s sixteenth birthday (or any other birthday that you deem to be special), the birth of a child, religious milestone events, personal achievements, holiday gifts etc. Perhaps the best reason of all to give a woman the gift of a diamond is “just because”. If you have a special person in your life, whether it’s a lover, a wife, a sister, a daughter, or a mother - you can rest fairly well assured that a diamond makes an excellent gift for almost any occasion.

Before you consider buying a diamond, it is important to understand the four “C’s”. They are excellent indicators of the value of the diamond. For those who are not familiar with the four C’s of diamonds they are: colour, clarity, cut, and carats. You will want to consider each of these when selecting a diamond to make sure your investment will stand the test of time and hopefully become more valuable over the years. The more spectacular the occasion, of course, the more stunning you will want your diamonds to be. Of course you will want to keep in mind your budget, your setting, and the metals that will be used in conjunction with the piece of jewellery you are creating or purchasing. Each of these will have an impact on the finished product. Good choices for diamonds are 18ct gold or platinum. In recent years platinum has become the choice for diamond jewellery as the metal is very hard and durable complimenting the gemstone properties.

When purchasing diamond jewellery, it pays to do your research ahead of time. Thanks to the growth of ecommerce on the internet, you will find that the prices of diamonds these days from one jeweller to the next are rather competitive. Better quality at better prices can now be found online instead of in the high street. Another thing to consider when buying your diamonds is whether or not they are conflict free. “Conflict free” diamonds are diamonds that do not lead to the funding of wars and that are not mined under conditions that are deemed unethical by the Kimberly Process. Always insist on Conflict Free diamonds from your jeweller.

Enduring, romantic, magical. Diamonds continue to captivate and enchant as symbols of hope and great expectations for the future. Enjoy.

Faceless Willow Tree Figurines - Doesn't That Sound a Bit Spooky?

If you haven't heard of them, or haven't actually seen any Willow Tree figurines, you might think miniature people with no faces sounds frankly just a little bit eerie. The figurines are in fact, beginning to be one of the more well-loved lines of gifts in the USA and their popularity is starting to spread worldwide. This article is written to explain why they have no faces, what the real point of them is and what people do with them once they've bought them. This should give you a clear idea of what the line is about, and maybe even inspire you when you are next buying a gift or an ornament for your home.

The artist Susan Lordi has gone on record as saying one of the sources of inspiration for her creations were dolls made for children by women from the Amish communities. Within these communities, religious observance means that the dolls are made without facial features and this gave the artist a winning idea for a range of figurines. With the face as blank canvas, the expression is left to body language instead with remarkable effect. Simply by the way a figure is sitting, or inclines their head, without needing any more information, the viewer can connect with the real purpose of the pieces. .

Whilst initially, a faceless figure maybe sounds spooky, nothing could be further from the truth. They are all about expressing many warm human sentiments of love and capturing aspects of loving relationships. There are figurines which embody mother and daughter relationships, father and daughter relationships, aspects of grandma and grandpa's kindly wisdom and the zest for life of children. There are also angels and some nativity figures for Christmas, including Mary and Joseph, attendant animals and a backdrop piece to represent a stable, so they are suitable gifts for Christian and Catholic people. Whilst they will make a resonant gift or ornament for people in family situations and within Christian or Catholic homes, however, they also have a wider appeal especially for collectors.

Precisely due to their 'blank canvas' for the face, their appeal is fairly universal, and many people have begun collect them. The range of figures available changes every year, some become 'retired' as new ones are introduced. Since they do not narrowly define relationships, they can appeal to an enormous range of people. People probably find they add to their collection as they themselves move into new emotional territory and new relationships and are then drawn to particular new figurines.

The ability to move with the changes in peoples lives is probably one of the success factors of the range. Another may be their 'fit' with many occasions for giving a gift - housewarming, sympathy, birthdays, Christmas, weddings and as friendship tokens. Understanding despite their expressionless faces, they are full of emotion might help the next time you need a gift or a new ornament - you may well want to have a look at the line to see what all the fuss is about.

Mary Higgins Clark book?

I once read a book by Mary Higgins Clark and I can not remember the title. However i do remember some information about the book. It was about a teenager who was in a coma for 4 years, and when she wakes up she learns that her mother was murdered and that the same guy is after her. And the murderer was leaving notes for her, or something like that. I also know that she thought it was the policeman who was trying to help her, but it wasn't. And at the end she fell in love with the police man and the murderer was captured.

If anyone knows the name of this book, please tell meee.

I think you mean The Other Side of Dark by Joan Lowry Nixon

Stacy, 17, awakens from the coma she's been in for four years, following a gunshot wound, and finds her world is drastically altered. The shooting incident that injured her also killed her mother. Her older sister is married and pregnant. Hairstyles, clothing and friends have changed. Stacy, if her memory returns, can put the man who shot her and murdered her mother behind bars. Soon every face she sees looks both familiar and strange, and the attention of a boy named Jeff is welcomed and feared. Because of press reports, the murderer knows that Stacy can find him. She's afraid she's being watched. And when her memory and the truth about the killer come back to her, Stacy faces the darker side of herself

Baby legs began its journey into the lives of moms and babies everywhere as an idea born from the contents of one loving mommy's diaper bag. This stay-at-home mom's desire to keep her little ones warm, safe and able to explore the many situations of life grew into something known today the world over.

This gem of a product is one that you can use from infancy on, because it is a one-size-fits most item. No longer is there the need to worry about our precious baby's knees getting injured while crawling on hardwood or ceramic floors. BabyLegs gives that added bit of protection to sensitive little knees permitting your little one to crawl just about anywhere! No floor, no grass, no other surface will have direct contact with little knees again. Yet explore they can, until their heart is content with no bruises or 'prickles' touching their sensitive skin.

Match them with your favorite holidays, mix and match them to establish unique looks for your older children, or give them to friends as presents. Give matching pairs to each member of your family when you are all going out in a crowd making it so much easier to locate everyone in your family by simply spotting their matching BabyLegs.

Mary Poppins Flies Into Broadway to Continue Her Legacy

Mary Poppins will be flying in, with her magic and umbrella to entertain and delight audiences of all ages on Broadway. From the classic stories of P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney movie which still today is a mainstay in many older and new parents video collection is set for a run on Broadway. The musical already has become a block buster hit in London where the ever so lengthy word "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" is being uttered from the streets of leaving patrons.

Mary Poppins has enjoyed a long history of popularity ever since the story was told in the hit movie, and for Disney perhaps it is the show which sets the example of family life which the company has been capitalizing on since it's conception. Mary Poppins is a tale of family, an ideal of perfect family in which a magic nanny can fly in and take a family in crisis and fix every struggle of relationship with a smile, some love and a bit of understanding. The two children, Jane and Michael are indeed in need of a "perfect" nanny which they request and their father who is a typical the typical working dad, set to provide for the Banks family through his banking career. Mrs. Banks is a mother who has become overloaded with her household duties and becomes burdened with the strains and hassles of nanny problems.

Flying in with her umbrella as a parachute comes Mary Poppins, the super nanny who becomes set on bringing order to the Banks family and that she does. Fixing and strengthening relationships within the household by bringing back the morals and values of past family functions. Mary Poppins seems almost set on turning Mr. Banks into a family man who can and will spend time with the children, in other words not just be the provider and Mrs. Banks from her seemingly portrayed feminist ideals, back to a women who should take pride and joy in her duties as a mother.

At the heart of the story of Mary Poppins seems to be an underlying theme or lesson, that was being exploited around the time the film hit the big screen. The lesson of being, that society was beggining to see the fall of the family system, one which has worked throughout the history of man. The tale seems to almost prophesied the fall of today's modern family values, in which no one has time for raising children properly and nannies have become a luxury. Perhaps Mary Poppin was sending her warning in which if families do not make the changes she suggests they will only slip further away from where the Banks family had found themselves. In any regards, at least for the Banks family they were indeed able to learn from the heart of this super magical flying nanny and bring their family back to "perfection," a perfection which seems to be becoming more and more lost in today's society. I mean come on, do families even eat together any more? I think the comeback popularity of Mary Poppins will once again touch the hearts and bring an enjoyable experience to families, which is what her legacy seems to have accomplished.

One of my favorites - what do you think? A young boy asked his mother for a red bike for Christmas.?

His mom, who was a religious woman, said, "Johnny, I think you should consider your behavior this past year. Why don't you go to your room and write a letter to God explaining why you think you deserve a red bike? Reluctantly, in his room, he begins: "Dear God, I've been an excellent boy this year, can I please have a red bike for Christmas?" He thinks about it "That's GOD - He'll KNOW. This won't work" Finally he has an idea. He sneaks out of the house to a small church nearby where a service is going on. No one notices when he goes in and STEALS a small statue of Mother Mary! Running back home, he places the statue on his desk and writes: "Dear God, this is Johnny. I have your mother. If you ever wanna see her again, you'll give me a red bike for Christmas!"

Amber Atherton is fast becoming the darling of the fashion world in her own right.

With her chiseled looks (reminiscent of a younger Kate Moss) its not hard to see why she has been courted by such celebrity magazines as Love Tatler Marie Claire et al

But not content with being on one side of the camera Amber explains how her passion for fashion translates into a Jewellery Empire built around myflashtrash.com and here is why she thinks its so successful

Choosing the right designers is key you have to really be in tune with your market audience and find the designers that stand out from the crowd and more than that they must be producing Attention grabbing designer jewellery

The hottest name in designer jewellery right now, designer Vivienne Barz is a London based Californian export whose irresistable designs are quickly becoming a fashion favourite with style goddesses and celebrites on both sides of the pond.

Designer Vivienne Barz whilst growing up on a farm in a 3000-person town in rural Northern California, Barz spent her childhood surrounded by nature and found inspiration in her rugged environment. Even as a young child, Barz knew she was destined to work in fashion: while most girls her age played with dolls, she spent her play time constructing jewelry using materials found in the fields behind her house, mixed with chains and pearls from her mother's costume jewelry.

After her move to Southern California as a young adult, Barz began traveling the world on surfing expeditions, never forgetting her love of jewelry design. As fate would have it, Barz was a better shopper than surfer. On her days abroad when the surf was too advanced, Barz would hit the local village markets in search of unique finds. Five continents and fourteen countries later, Barz had acquired a vast assortment of distinctive beads, gemstones and fabric, ranging from zebu horn in Madagascar, coral in Indonesia, jade in New Zealand, to silk in Japan. Upon returning to California, she began crafting jewelry using her finds from the countries she visited mixed with American materials.

When Barz began wearing her pieces, women would stop her on the street, inquiring where they could find such exotic jewelry, most occasions offering to buy the necklace off her neck. Barz's designs soon generated a buzz and, in late 2007, Barz cashed in her savings, left her job in marketing and created her dream company: vivi+vivi.

While most of her current collections are crafted of entirely new Western materials, Barz still uses her global and vintage finds in her One-of-a-Kind pieces.

Barz is the epitome of the designers we strive to promote and our customers certainly approve says Amber.

Dame Barbara Cartland ( 1 )

The story really begins in Scotland where there is a village
named after the Cartlands and where the family are reported in
ancient Chronicles as being in Lanarkshire as far back as AD
1200. Some of the Cartlands moved south and Barbara Cartland's
Great Grandfather had an estate in Worcestershire. At the time
of the Industrial Revolution in 1840 he moved to Warwickshre and
built a large house in open countryside at a place which is now
known as Kings Norton in Birmingham. A wealthy man with a Brass
Factory in Birmingham, his second son, James Cartland, became a
great Financier and Barbara Cartland's Grandfather.

James Cartland helped to build up the City of Birmingham and was
twice offered a Baronetcy and a Knighthood - all of which he
refused. James married Flora Falkner who was a direct descendant
of King Robert the Bruce of Scotland. The couple only had one
son, James Bertram Falkner Cartland, who fell in love and
married with Mary ( Polly ) Hamilton Scobell. The couple moved
to Worcestershire and on July 9th 1901 at Vectis Lodge,
Edgbaston - Barbara Cartland (Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland )
was born.

The family, were originally born into an enviable degree of
middle class security, but the suicide of her paternal
grandfather left them short of money. The family were forced to
move to Amerie Court in Pershore. Tragedy struck once again when
Major James Cartland was killed in France in the final weeks of
the ending of the First World War. Barbara Cartland was just
seventeen. When asked by her mother where she would like to
live, Barbara Cartland chose London and the family, including
her two brothers Ronald and Anthony, subsequently moved to the
capital. Her enterprising mother opened a London dress shop to
make ends meet "Poor I may be," Polly Cartland once said, "but
common I am not". Anthony and Ronald would both be killed in
battle, one day apart, in 1940.

After attending Malvern Girls' College and Abbey House, an
educational institution in Hampshire, Cartland became a
successful journalist and a gossip columnist. Her first novel,
"Jigsaw," was published in 1923. It was a huge success and
Barbara Cartland began to write seriously in order to earn money.

In 1927 Barbara Cartland married Alexander George McCorquodale,
a former Officer of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who
was heir to a British printing fortune. They had a daughter
called Raine who became "Deb of the Year" in 1947 and much later
the stepmother of Diana, Prince of Wales.

In 1935, Barbara's brother, Ronald, was working in the
Conservative Central Office and anxious to become a candidate in
the Labour held Kings Norton Division of Birmingham. In those
days a Member of Parliament had to pay their own expenses of
around £1,000. Ronald was only earning £4 a week.

These were turbulent times for the family as Barbara, had now
divorced her husband whose family confiscated his money and left
Barbara and Raine, aged four, with a Marriage Settlement of £500
per annum. The divorce involved charges and countercharges of
infidelity and Barbara Cartland would later marry one of the men
Alexander McCorquodale accused her of dallying with, his cousin
- Hugh Mc Corquodale.

At this time Barbara Cartland was writing for a weekly magazine
and several newspapers but always under an assumed name so that
no one knew who the writer was. Determined that her brother
should stand for Kings Norton she wrote 10,000 words a day in
order to pay for his Election Expenses. The house that her
Grandfather had built was still in Kings Norton. Labour decided
to field a well known politician. Barbara Cartland wrote and
canvassed on behalf of her brother who finally won with a
majority of nearly 6000. All the hard work and commitment had
paid off.

Ronald and Anthony Cartland were both killed in the Second World
War. At the entrance to Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire
there is a Calvary erected to the memory of Barbara Cartland's
Father, Mother and two Brothers. Cartland Road in Kings Norton
is named after the family. Barbara Cartland went on to write a
biography about Ronald which included his best political
speeches. In 1936 Barbara Cartland married Hugh McCorquodale, an
officer of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and who had
received the Military Cross for Gallantry. The couple had two
sons, Ian and Glen. Barbara Cartland speaks fondly about the
family visits to Scotland.

" I travel all over the world. I am thrilled by the exotic
beauty of the East and the vital virility of the West.

But as I turn for home, my heart is in the Highlands"

Barbara Cartland lived at Camfield Place, Hatfield,
Hertfordshire. The family still own the Estate which was
originally settled on by a Knight in 1275. It once featured a
Tudor Manor House which was pulled down by Beatrix Potter's
Grandfather who rebuilt the house in 1867. Beatrix Potter wrote
that Camfield was the place that she loved best and where she
wrote "The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The estate features an Oak
Tree, planted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth in 1550 whilst she was
imprisoned at Hatfield.
