Botched Abortion
Doctors in Italy, had to perform an about turn and rescue a baby that they had just aborted because they made a mistake (nothing new here about any doctor in any country). During a prenatal check up a diagnostic test detected that the child in the womb had a malformed gastrointestinal tract and advised the mother to abort. Mother subsequently decided and the doctors happily carried out the abortion only to discover that the aborted baby was perfectly healthy.
I'm always amazed that we put so much trust into a profession that is so arrogant that they believe that when they proclaim probabilities they assume it has a 100% occurrence rate. Doctors, I believe a poor statisticians. They don't seem to comprehend that the probability of something happening also means that there is the probability of that same thing not happening. They are blind to the opposite and convince their patients likewise.
In the Italian case above, the diagnostic test has a false positive rate of 1% among unborn babies. This may seem like an insignificant number. But think about it, if a doctor were to scan 10,000 babies per year (not an improbable number in a large hospital), 100 babies will be wrongly diagnosed and promptly given the execution edict. 100 wrongful executions! Even jails don't perform such high number wrongful executions per year.
We humans have begun to rely too heavily on statistics rather than staunchly on God. Statistics is never fool proof and belief in God is not foolhardy.
