Consider What Type Of Grass Your Lawn Needs

Most people, if they think of grass at all, think that one size fits all - any grass will do for any lawn. That's not the case. There are more grass species than flower species, so it's easy to find the right one for your lawn.

Grass Is As Grass Does

When you drive past homes in your car, you may enjoy looking out at the yards and seeing the vast expanses of lush green grass, interspersed with the occasional flower or vegetable garden. A rock or water garden with an appropriate statue might catch your eye. While you may know the names of every flower that you see, can you say the same about the grass?

Grass isn't just "grass." There are almost as many types of grass as there are types of flowers, and like flowers you need to choose the appropriate grass for your lawn. Grass that you're going to use for your lawn should, really, be called lawn grass, to differentiate it from other types of grasses.

Before choosing your lawn grass, you need to know as much about the lawn as possible. Of what is the soil composed? Clay, loam, sand? You'll want just the right proportion of these materials to ensure the best growing environment for your new grass. And that goes for the pH balance as well - the level of acidity or alkalinity in your soil.

Are there a lot of trees in your yard, with branches spread wide? This can interfere with the amount of sunlight that manages to filter down onto your lawn and feed your grass. If you want to keep those trees (and if you have trees on your lawn that are over a hundred years old, there's a lot of history there) than you'll want a type of grass that doesn't need a lot of sunlight.

If your area gets a lot of rain, you'll want a type of grass that loves all that wet stuff. If your area is lucky to get a few inches of rain a year, you'll want a different type of grass.

Then there's the color. Grass color varies widely, from dark greens to light yellows. It's nice to be able to vary the color of your lawn - but it might get annoying if you have vast amounts of dark green with patches of yellow intermixed.

So, what types of lawn grasses are there?

For grass that grows quickly in cool climates, you'll want to consider the grass families such as bluegrass, bentgrass (usually used for golf courses), ryegrasses (used at the Wimbledon tennis courts) , fescues (used for bowling greens) and Grama grass (praire grass, good for erosion control). They each have their own particular properties, so you'll want to investigate them all, either on the web or by talking to a gardening professional in your area.

For grass that grows quickly in warmer climates, consider zoysiagrass, bermudagrass (great for drought tolerance), St. Augustine Grass, bahiagrass (great in Florida because it tolerates salt well), centipedegrass, carpetgrass or buffalograss

You can research all these types of grasses on the web, and it makes for fascinating reading. But the best way to find out what kind of lawn grass is right for your area is to consult a garden professional near your home.

Christmas Villages-Another 5 Great Locations for your Village Display

So you still have not decided where to display your new collectible Christmas village this next holiday season.  Or maybe you are just tired of setting up your current display in the same expected location year after year and are looking for that ultimate new location to showcase your Department 56, Lemax, or other village collectibles.  Grab a notepad and pen, because you may find your creative talents energized and anxious to be put to use when you hear about these 5 great locations for your village display.

Before I suggest the following possible locations for your Christmas village, it is important to remember that the viewability of your village is affected greatly by the space you have available.  Never being a fan of displaying every single piece in my collection just for the sake of unpacking them out of mothballs, I always recommend striving for visual impact in a display over showing the quantity of a collection.  For that reason alone, you can consider the following locations to place smaller vignettes, or groupings of your village collectibles to create more visually impacting village settings.

  • Curio cabinets:  Not everyone has a curio cabinet, but for those who do, consider temporarily replacing some of your regular curios with a small village vignette or two.  The key for success here is to keep the vignettes small because of the glass shelving you typically find in a curio cabinet.  Rather than find out the hard way that your village display was too heavy for the glass shelves, why not simply group a small vignette or two where each can tell its own miniature story.  You will love the glimmering effect created by the village house lights shining and reflecting off of the mirrored background and glass enclosure of the cabinet.  It is very easy to camouflage the light cords with a few miniature pine trees strategically placed.

  • Wall units:  Wall units are a strong and perfect location for displaying smaller village vignettes.  Because the shelving is typically wood or a composite material, you will not have to worry at all about the weight of your village like you would with a curio cabinet.  For that reason, you can experiment with terracing in your vignette.  Elevate a village piece or two towards the background to create textured focal points for viewers whether their eyes are drawn to the back or the front of your display.  Too often I see displays where a person has to strain their neck to see a beautifully detailed village building shrouded from view by another similarly sized piece or one bigger right in front of it.

  • Garage side window:  Yes, you heard me right.  Have you ever thought of showing off your village, or maybe a few of your village pieces in a smaller vignette inside of a side garage window?  Perhaps you have been thinking for years of a way to incorporate your display in to your exterior decorating without the risk of damage from the elements.  Well, a framed display inside a garage window that is viewable towards the front of your home is a wonderful way to add a storybook appeal to your holiday decorations.  Be sure to see my article entitled ‘Creating a Magical Window Display for your Christmas Village’ for details on how to go about constructing this type of display.

  • Foyer sideboard table:  Sideboard tables, sofa tables, and consoles are ideal locations for smaller village groupings.  They are very easy to arrange village displays on top of, and are one of the better locations for isolating your display for a more focused viewing point.  These tables offer the advantage of displaying at a level where even smaller children can see every aspect of your village setting.  Of course that can also be its greatest disadvantage.  If you believe tiny roaming hands may mean the destruction of your miniature town, choose another location.

  • Under glass of a wood-framed coffee table:  This is a truly unique concept for displaying villages.  Imagine family and friends sitting around the family room talking about your ‘village under glass.’  This idea takes a bit more time and care to assemble your display, but the results are amazing.  If you have this type of table, simply remove the glass insert(s) temporarily while you construct your village.  Place a large enough box underneath the table to elevate the viewing surface that will be visible when you replace the glass back on top, but not so large that the tops of the village buildings or trees are too high and protrude through the glass level.  Make sure to place a solid and flat item on top of the box to create a sound surface, such as a shelf or two side by side.  Cover the box and shelf with a small white tablecloth to not only cover the more unsightly aspects of your box foundation, but to also give your display a nice wintry effect.  Finally, employ your own personal creativity to make a truly unique type of display.

I hope you enjoyed these ideas for possible locations to display your village.  You may even have a few of your own that suit your home even better.  The key thing is to take some time and consider the visual impact you can achieve rather than just lining up your collection end to end.

Merry Christmas!

Universal Health Care?

May 31st, 2009 raphael's helper No comments

Recently Catholic Exchange reproduced a letter from the USCCB to the Senate Committee on Finance titled, Health Care Reform and the Dignity of Life.

The letter from the Bishops was reminding the politicians that health care was a basic human right that all humans need to live a dignified life and therefore the government should provide unverisal health care coverage. I replied to this article and I duplicate my reply below:

As much as I agree that health care is a right, it’s also right that all people should strive for a healthy lifestyle.

Let’s ask why health care costs are uncontrollable today. It’s simply because humans have relinquished responsibility for their health and passed it on a silver platter to the medical professionals and Big Pharma.

The basic question to ask are the following:
1. what caused our illness
2. how do we cure the cause (as opposed to controlling or managing the symptoms as being practiced today)
3. how do we ensure we don’t fall ill again

As Christians we have been taught that disease is the result of the Fall. I agree with that but that doesn’t mean we can’t be healthy. Almost every disease is the result of some sinful behavior on our part. Let’s look at them…

Sloth - we have become lackadaisical with regards to what we eat and drink. Result - cardiac illness, diabetes, cancer

Envy - instead of being grateful for what we have, we envy what someone else has instead of blessing them. Result - depression and to some extent panic attacks and anxiety.

Lust - Sexual lust results in every sexually transmitted disease, most abortions (which in turn play a heavy role in depression and breast cancers).

Greed - wanting more power and money for their own ends always leaves us unsatisfied. If there was a more benevolent goal in life for amassing wealth and power like uplifting the plight of the downtrodden, we will have less depression and unhappiness. Numerous research has shown that unhappiness leads to heart diseases and mental problems.

Wrath - forever scheming to destroy someone else emotionally or physically, creates hormonal imbalances inside our bodies that will eventually eat into us a results in mental conditions, heart diseases and even cancers.

I’ll stop here, but you get the picture. It definitely is sin that causes diseases and if we return to living life as God intended, including eat the right foods, we can prevent or at least reduce risks of disease. Then we don’t have to depend of expensive drugs.

My belief is that God has created all the cures that we need for all our diseases in the flora and fauna He created. Maybe that’s also what He meant when He said to subdue the earth. But we are lazy and prefer to rely on quick fixes like drugs.

I used to work in Big Pharma for 22 years and left recently because I finally couldn’t take the unethical practices and derision of natural (God-created) remedies. If you’re exposed to natural heath care remedies, you’d be surprised that they can actually cure diseases.

I set-up Breakthrough Health Solutions, LLC to bring the good news that God has given us a way to be disease-free and also given us all the tools to cure disease. I’m giving away 365 Free “Your Daily Health Booster Tips” via email. Just register at http://www.BreakthroughHealthSolutions.com to immediately receive these tips.

Do your part in reducing health care costs. Don’t wait for the government.

Memories are Made of This: Christmas Number Ones

Christmas for some people is all about the music. Music evokes emotion and gets everyone into the spirit of the occasion and when it comes to Christmas songs there was never a truer word spoken; come late November every other song on the radio is a festive favourite.

Ever since the number one singles chart began in 1952 we - and our parents and grandparents before us - have looked forward with great anticipation to the Christmas Number One being announced before the Queen's speech on Christmas Day.

It has to be said that years ago it was far more exciting than it is now; there was a time when it really did go to the wire and no one knew who was going to be the lucky artist to whisk away the festive honour that year.

Nowadays it's a different story with our 25th December top spot being decided long before the Christmas cards have hit the shops thanks to shows like X-Factor. Just take a look at the number ones for the last three years and there's the proof; it's pretty much decided for us! Where did the challenge go?

So what is the most popular type of Christmas number one? One with religious undertones? Something on the party theme? A novelty single? Or songs that have nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever? It's quite astonishing that considering Christmas is after all first and foremost a religious festival, there have only been a total of four religion-themed Christmas number ones out of 56 to date. Can you name them? Answers at the end of this article for those who like a memory challenge!

Songs on the party theme are far more in abundance however and are on the most part responsible for the Christmas classics that fill the yuletide compilations that are two-a-penny in the tinsel-framed retail displays these days. But don't we love them! Timeless tunes like Merry Xmas Everybody; Lonely This Christmas; Merry Christmas Everyone and Mistletoe and Wine definitely have that neck-tingling effect that brings the blissful childhood memories of Christmas flooding back. Any idea what years these all time greats graced the Christmas number one spots? Answers below!

Novelty hits; you can't possibly love them, you can easily loathe them, but let's face it, it's likely you've had one stuck in your head for a long and painful twenty four hours, or less if you're lucky. Benny Hill, Mr Blobby and Bob the Builder are probably the worst novelty Christmas number one offenders but others that were slightly more endearing included St Winifred's School Choir (There's no one quite like Grandma; 1980) and Rene and Renata (Save your Love; 1982).OK probably not strictly novelty, maybe just a little bit on the tacky side, but fun even so.

All in all, the majority of Christmas number ones over the years have actually had nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever. Some of them were timeless anthems that will, nevertheless be constantly played for years to come. But others have been sanctioned to the never-to-be-aired-again one-hit-wonder file.

So with Christmas drawing ever nearer thoughts turn to what melodic ditty may occupy the number one spot this 25th December. Let's wait and see...

Answers to questions posed above:

The four religious themed Christmas number ones were:

1.    Mary's Boy Child: Harry Belafonte; 1957

2.    When a Child is Born: Johnny Mathis; 1976

3.    Mary's Boy Child-Oh My Lord: Boney M; 1978

4.    Saviour's Day: Cliff Richard; 1990

The Party theme hits number one years were:

1.    Merry Xmas Everybody: 1973

2.    Lonely This Christmas: 1974

3.    Merry Christmas Everyone: 1985

4.    Mistletoe and Wine: 1988

The Smart Way to Buy Gold Pendants

Anyone who has ever worn a gold chain must have felt the itch to buy a pendant, at some time or the other. What makes gold pendants so irresistible is the fact that they are so diverse. Big, small, traditional, funky, plain, jewel encrusted, engraved or plain – the variety is enough to make your head turn.

Gold pendants make excellent gifts, particularly for women. So, whether it’s a wedding anniversary, a birthday or Valentine’s, you can find just the right pendant to gift someone you love. Why, you even find ‘broken hearted’ pendants which help you say ‘au revoir’ in style!

Whether you want to purchase a gold pendant for someone else or for yourself, it pays to have some idea about what you’re going to buy. With gold becoming dearer by the day, it is quite easy to fall for scams and frauds. Here are a few tips that will help you buy gold pendants, the smart way!

The first thing you have to understand when you decide to

buy gold pendants is that pendants are not the same as charms, though the terms are used interchangeably. A charm is smaller in size and is designed to hang from a bracelet or a chain. On the other hand, pendants are larger and are designed to hang from chains or necklaces. A more important difference is this: charms are generally used for luck; pendants do not really have any such significance.

Where to shop: You have two choices- your local store or the e-store. Both have their advantages. With the local store, you can be 100% sure of quality. When you shop online, the risks are more unless you choose very carefully. However, the great advantage of online shopping is the fantastic price discounts you can avail of. Online shops offer you the same quality at hefty discounts – sometimes up to 65% off. And you don’t even have to step out of your house to make your purchase.

Get gold savvy: If you’re buying gold, you need to know your karats. 24k (or marked as ‘999’) is pure gold and you won’t be buying 24k gold pendants because 24K gold is malleable and soft. 14k is the most popular variety of gold sold in the US. Gold that is designated as 14k contains approximately 59% gold. The rest is an added alloy, which helps to make the jewelry durable and strong.

White gold: Yes, gold comes in white color too! This is because manufacturers add palladium or nickel to it. White gold pendants are stunning and look wonderful when they are encrusted with diamonds or pearls.

Understand value: The price of gold pendants depends on two things: the rate of gold and the artistic value. On most websites, the total cost is listed per item. However, at times, you may also find the cost per gram. In that case, you will have to add the cost of the total weight of gold and the cost of design/cutting to get the total cost of the pendant. In this regard, please keep in mind that some finished items may have an artistic value that is greater than the cost of gold in it!

Understand compatibility: The weight of the pendant you choose must be in keeping with the chain or the necklace. So, a huge pendant will not sit well on a delicate chain. Besides, such a pendant will break the delicate chain in the course of time.

Christmas Carol Ending

Please help, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens!!?

Write a different ending/ beginning for the story.

I need ideas, I will NOT copy and paste your text in my homework.

Thank you so much :)

When I was attending elementary school I received corporate punishment for using my imagination.
I think it is great the system now allows or even encourages the use of one's imagination.
You are being asked to begin and end a short book differently than as it was published.
Likely Chuck Dickens had the same problem. He likely had a whole raft of handwritten pages in his round file basket at the side of his writing desk.
Open up your book and read the opening, taking notes. Think of the possibilities . . . all of them . . . why not have Marley still alive or some such thing . . . the end could be like a soap opera ending where the 'presumed dead' come back to life (not as zombies in my imagination but perhaps in yours). Or maybe Scrooge purchases a Christmas Fowl for everyone in all of London. It has to be your work, though.
