The Celebrity Poker Showdown Is Coming

Poker has been around for over a hundred years and yet, it has only really surged in popularity recently since it first spread across America in the 1800's. Since the year 2000, people have become more and more interested in the game. Because it has been around for so long, many people wonder what the reason is for the sudden interest. Well, it's not a mystery. Aside from the advent on Online poker games and tournaments, especially those played with the Texas Hold'em variation, the popularity is largely due to televised poker games, including the World Poker Tour, and celebrity poker games, like Celebrity Poker Showdown.

When poker first aired on television, viewers were unable to see the players' hole cards. Since then, new technology has provided the worldwide audience with this intimate view of the game. Add that to people's fascination with celebrities and money and you've got a winning combination. That's why the television show, the Celebrity Poker Showdown, is such a success.

The Celebrity Poker Showdown is a celebrity game show on Bravo, which shows celebrities playing poker and donating their winnings to charity. In each show, five celebrities play no-limit Texas Hold'em in a tournament for a charity of their choice.

When a celebrity is eliminated, he or she moves to the "Loser's Lounge" to watch the rest of the game. They are then interviewed by show hosts about the game and their strategy. The show is always hosted by a celebrity and this job has seen a number of high profile actors and comedians and features a running commentary by a high-profile poker expert.

The first six tournaments were played for $250,000. The four players eliminated in the first five games win $5,000 each; fourth place wins $10,000; third place wins $12,500; second place wins $20,000; and first place wins $100,000.

With the start of the seventh tournaments, the prize pool increased substantially to $1,000,000. With that change, the prize money in the championship is divided as follows; the four players eliminated in the first five games get $5,000; fifth place gets $25,000; fourth place gets $75,000; third place gets $100,000; second place gets $200,000; and first place gets $500,000.

Some of the celebrities featured include Ben Affleck, Don Cheadle, Emily Proctor, Martin Sheen, John Spencer, Hank Azaria, Nicole Sullivan, Coolio, Shannon Elizabeth, Ron Livingston, Sarah Silverman, David Cross, Tom Green, Mimi Rogers, Rosario Dawson, Mena Suvari, James Woods, Star Jones Reynolds, Matthew Perry, Tom Everett Scott, Dave Navarro, Jerry O'Connell, Kathy Griffin, Kevin Nealon, Chevy Chase, Angela Basset, Mekhi Phifer and many more.

The Celebrity Poker Showdown is so popular it has even inspired parodies of the show. In 2005, Saturday Night Live dedicated a skit to the popular tournament. Two celebrity players lent their voices to an animated TV Funhouse parody called "Celebrity Mugshot Poker," where various celebrities are represented by animated versions of their mugshots.

It is anybody's guess where poker will take the world next.

Vibrant Spring Wedding Theme

A Spring Wedding brings a theme of excitement. It's the time of year when flowers begin to bloom and the warm air is revitalizing. Even though we lose an hour of sleep, you'd never know it. We're rejuvenated from the long winter months. The bulky clothing gets packed away until next year, and we're ready to bare some skin.

This is exceptionally great news to the bride who wishes to wear a sleeveless wedding gown, or a gown made out of lighter material. Spring weddings make lighter dress attire appealing to everyone! The bridal party can wear elegant bridal gown in pastel colors of blue, yellow, pink, mauve, white, and aqua.

Spring Weddings are embraced by many couples every year. Most couples who married in Spring would tell you that it's the perfect season for a marriage ceremony. You can incorporate gorgeous seasonal flowers into your décor, such as Easter lilies, daffodils, tulips and Irises. In the colder months, these flowers are out of season and are very difficult to find. Spring provides an opportunity to embrace life and partnership. What better way to express your undying love that a spring wedding?

To compliment the theme, our tables can be draped with pastel linens, use watering cans as table centerpieces and place fresh cut flowers into their centers. Daffodils and/or tulips make a beautiful touch and they give off such a pleasing scent! Use bright colored ribbons to travel down any poles in the reception hall. It will remind family members of Maypoles, which are also associated with Spring. If you are getting married on a date close to the Easter holiday, incorporate an Easter theme to your wedding. Give miniature wicker baskets that include small personalized gifts as a wedding favor. After all, giving wedding favors is important, as it's proper wedding etiquette.

If there are a lot of small children invited to your wedding, give them room to play! Employ fun games, such as an easter egg hunt, or pin the tail on the bunny. They'll have the time of their lives on your special day. It's something that they'll never forget. Let your imagination run wild as you select your decorations. If for instance, you love butterflies, use them in your Spring wedding theme. Use butterfly card holders to let each guest know where they'll be seated. Hang butterfly decorations from the ceiling. If you can find butterfly candle holders to hold a votive, by all means do it! This is an occasion that only happens once in a lifetime. Do it with style!

Prayer & Meditation

Richard Rohr operates under the ministry that is entitled Center For Action & Contemplation. He has it nailed. We so need both. As I was pondering my navel in the back yard, with the winds whisltlig through the trees, I felt this peace of just sitting, doing nothing, and observing all the action going on around me.

We don't do enough of that. We miss what Eckhart Tolle calls the Power of Now. And what was in my NOW moment?

Blue Jays, red birds, doves, sparrows, robbins, wood peckers, and squirrels were about doing their thing. Cars were driving in and out of the cul-de-sac. Did I mention the activity of three golden retrievers? Me, I, I just WAS. And then this is what I heard.

We in the West need to explore the East.

The West is primarily into PRAYER and of course the putting down of MEDITATION. Prayer is in a sense action direction. Do this for me God, do that for me Jesus. We Westerners are DOERS and that’s good unless that is ALL that we do.

We need a balanced prayer life and Christology.

The East is primarily into meditation which is a non-doing of course- one is just to BE! It is though a ceasing of constant doing that sctually does produce. Since Jesus came to tell us that we are ALL ONE with the Father, maybe we should try and do BOTH.

Human rage and intolerance must be abandoned.

So, how’s your prayer life and your meditation, followed by a deeper contemplation? We need every weapon in the arsenal. To choose one method over another, to choose a Western tradition over an Eastern, or to choose only what we know over what we don't is to "miss the mark".

Isn't that the definition of sin?

Persona Non Grata!

Who is this guy anyway? Mainline Christianity has done all they can to write him out of all history! He is a one of Catholicism's worst nightmares! Martin Luther couldn't stand him and made his work an addendum to the Bible even though he was later put back into the book. For most Christians to maintain their orthodox views (which really are right after all), they have to make this historical figure a persona non grata! Who is this man?

The VERIDICAL facts are that this man was one of the most righteous men in religious history. He was even reverently called "The JUST". He only wore LINEN, he was a vegetarian, and he was really the first POPE- not Peter. He was the first Bishop of the church at Jerusalem. Who is he?

James the Just- the brother of Jesus!

Now you know why the Catholic Church ignores him. How can Jesus have a brother if Mary was a virgin- perpetually? Good question! James was the leader of the Jewish Christian community, the head of the church, whom Paul did not like at all. Jewish Christian theology didn't sit well with Paul as his calling was to the Gentiles: even though the church Jewish church at Jerusalem accepted uncircumcised Gentiles into their fold.

As good as that was Paul wasn't interested in the historical jesus whom he did not know by the flesh. Paul was only interested in the Christos: his main theme!

The Jewish Christian LOST and the Hellenistic Pauline Gentile Christians won. Eventually the Catholic Church prevailed and James the Just needed to get LOST! Neither James, the relatives of Jesus, nor the Jewish Christian Church at Jerusalem believed Jesus was born of a virgin (and James should know), nor did they see jesus as god; rather, they saw Jesus as the Davidic Messiah.

Christians and Lutherans saw salvation as only by FAITH, so having James speak of faith by WORKS was just too much. In fact all FOUR of the primarily JEWISH works (James, Jude, Revelation, and Hebrews) were trashed by Martin Luther were put as an addendum at the back of his German Bible seeing them as inferior to the other books of the canon.

Who tells you such things these days?

History reveals the TRUTHS but the history of James the Just, the brother of Jesus causes too many problems for mainline Christianity to deal with these days. Besides, if the FACTS get out about James the Just, there's a lot of Christian dogma and doctrine that must change and who needs CHANGE? Have you seen the CHANGES since the 2008 election? Ah, that's another story for another time.

Children Face Painting Designs

Face painting for children is a common pastime offered at community fairs and similar types of events. Of course there are a number of children face painting designs that may be employed. Here are some ways to choose designs that are right for the occasion.

In some instances, there may be a theme to the event where children face painting designs are employed. For example, a harvest festival that focuses on a vegetable or fruit indigenous to the area may provide the basis for the types of face painting designs that are offered. Designs such as apples, bunches of grapes, or even rows of crops may be a fun and colorful option.

The designs may draw their theme from a holiday as well. Flags may be ideal for an event centered on Flag Day, Memorial Day, or the Fourth of July. Christmas and Easter may feature children face painting designs that center on religious or secular themes associated with the event, such as crosses, Santa faces, easter eggs or hearts.

Of course, children face painting designs may also be very free form in nature. To that end, the designs may focus on anything from symbols that are indicative of local culture, favored music groups or performers, or even a hobby, such as music or an art form.

The important thing to keep in mind with these types of designs is to keep it fun and easy, so that the child will enjoy the design and have a lot of fun wearing the finished product for the duration of the event. Also, make sure the children face painting designs that are offered are within the skill range of the person who will apply the designs. That way, both the creator and the child will have a great time with the activity.

The Santa Brand: How Does Santa Stack Up Against The Pillsbury Dough Boy?

An Entrepreneur's Guide to Getting Noticed in a Noisy Marketplace

My daughter, the one I affectionately call Daughter Number 2, recently challenged herself to participate in a high school Debate Tournament, following in her mother's footsteps. The topic? Be It Resolved that Santa Claus is a Dangerous Concept Which Should be Abolished. So, 6 AM, the morning of the debate, I'm surfing the net for stories of bank robberies and kidnappings by men in Santa suits. It didn't take long before I got sidetracked onto something even better― a bunch of articles on The Santa Brand. (Let the kid do her own research!)

Gotta admit, it never occurred to me before, but Mr. Claus fits most of the criteria I set out in my upcoming book "Step Into The Spotlight! -'Cause ALL Business is Show Business!" (Publication Date: April 2008), criteria for developing a dynamic business persona using showbiz techniques.

In show business, actors, directors and playwrights spend a lot of time on character development. In business, we call this building a brand. A business persona, just like a character in a play, needs a unique look (white beard, rosy cheeks, an enlarged perimeter), a unique costume (Red Suit, much better for branding than Banker Blue), a unique name (Santa Claus), a clearly defined personality (Jollier than the Jolly Green Giant), a strong philosophy (You gotta be nice, not naughty) and the guy's gotta know his lines and stick to the script ("Ho, Ho, Ho!").

Santa does all that. And the guy's consistent. You never see him in a blue Hawaiian shirt, even if he's hanging out at the Honolulu Hilton in December. Try leaving your scarf or gloves or umbrella at a Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast. Would everyone immediately know to whom it belonged? They would if you forgot your red velvet hat with a dangling white pom-pom!

The Pillsbury Dough Boy, The Maytag Repairman and The Man from Glad also each have a consistent look and OK, the Dough Boy is irresistible. But none of these characters have the emotional connection with their audience that Santa has. And it doesn't matter how many times you've seen Santa's show, you'll be sitting in the front row again next December. The Maytag and Glad guys stand for dependability, but Santa's not only dependable, he stands for hope as well, ask any kid on December 24.

Speaking of kids, why is it that we let our kids sit on the laps of strange men in department stores? Why is it that year after year, chubby red suited guys get away with "naughty" deeds like robbing banks and kidnapping kids? Why? Because Santa is such a strong brand that not only kids, but adults, lower their guard and trust the guy. We even leave the guy milk and cookies by the fireplace and encourage him to break into the house when we're all asleep. Even the Grinch Who Stole Christmas eventually succumbed to his charm as did the journalist who wrote "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". What does he stand for? Goodness and kindness and "pull out your wallet".

Santa even knows how to work publicity. Many would disagree, but my philosophy has always been that it's hard to burst onto the scene if you've been hanging around on stage all along! Santa doesn't try to get ink 365 days a year. He lets Cupid have Valentine's Day, lets the chicks and bunnies arm wrestle over Easter, leaves Thanksgiving to the turkeys and only then, bursts onto the scene after the stuffing's been stuffed away.

But we're talking business. You're probably thinking, "Yeah Tsufit, but can the guy make money?" Yah Man! Actors are always asking their director "What's my motivation?" and the classic joke answer is "To get paid". Santa knows how to bring in the bucks as well as the next guy, better even. But there's one question nobody seems to be asking. Who's he making money for?

The major downside of the Santa Brand is that, unlike the Pillsbury Dough Boy or the Man from Glad or the Maytag Repairman, Santa will work for anyone. (You'd never catch the Maytag guy hawking computers on the side.)

I recently snuck out of a marketing seminar to visit the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta and learned that although the Claus-ster's been around for ages, Coke gave the guy his current look, Coca Cola Red suit and all, way back in the 1930's and put him to work selling The Real Thing. But like Kleenex became just another tissue and Zipper became just another fastener, Generic Red Suit Santa started raking it in for anyone who wanted a piece of the action.

It's nice that he lends his name to charity and stands on street corners pulling in bowls of dollars for the Salvation Army and unwrapped new toys for unfortunate kids. But that's where I'd draw the line if he were my brand. In Showbiz, unique characters are the show's best currency. If the character of Ugly Betty started showing up on Grey's Anatomy and The Gilmore Girls and Desperate Housewives, it wouldn't be long before she'd lose her draw.

The lesson here? Develop a clear living breathing persona for your business, but make sure it's your brand, one that has a unique look, philosophy and connection with the crowd so people will pull out their wallets for you too. Before you know it, you'll be rolling in more dough than the Doughboy!
